I am thrilled to be writing to you about the incredible work Shaftesbury High School have been doing this year to promote active travel amongst their pupils. Having worked on the STARS / Travel for Life programme for nearly 3 years now with Sustrans, Redbridge & Waltham Forest council and most recently TfL, I have NEVER seen a school put in this much effort to empower their students to form more sustainable travel habits.
Not only this, being a specialist SEND school that supports students with complex needs, Shaftesbury High School are potentially unable to access the full range of activities offered as part of the by Travel for Life programme. However, over the hours have spent with Nisha and Sejal in recent months, as well as reviewing their evidence, it is clear they do everything in their power to adapt the activities to meet their students needs - from tailoring Walk to School week, to balance bike training for students who use wheelchairs - working with the school has been a huge privilege and I have learnt SO much.
Nisha and Sejal have been kind enough to invite me to the school next year and I fully intend to do so and learn more. I would encourage you to do the same - they have been incredibly supportive in helping me learn about active travel and SEND students.
